Salalah being the green gem of Oman, we, the Green Pioneers, decided to conduct a beach drive to clean up the famous Dahariz beach of Salalah.
The morning had started out with a bit of rain as the monsoon season was going on in Salalah. We gathered near Dahariz beach shores in the early hours of the day. With high hopes of cleaning the beach we started planning and laying out the required materials.
As the beach shore line was huge, we divided the volunteers into 5 groups of 2 each. As part of physical safety, we had used the following items
Safety gloves
Rakers (for embedded plastics)
heavy-duty trash bags
As the day progressed, each team fulfilled their goal of collecting 5 bags of litter, which kept at the common meet point that was decided earlier.
Few teams, had gone towards the farther end of the shore as there were pits of accumulated plastic, while other teams scouted the area near the food trucks for used cups and other plastic/thermocol based disposable products
After each team had done their part of collecting the waste, we further proceeded to weigh the waste collected.
We had collected 42 Kilograms (92 lbs) of waste in total and had approximately 6 to 7 bags of trash. The waste mainly included bottle caps, leftover waste for BBQ parties, small pieces of wrappers and sachets.
After the collection and weighing of trash, we had decided to handover the trash to the local municipality. It is to be noted that the trash will further be segregated by them before sending it to the landfills.
Over the past few years as the level of microplastics have increased in the ocean bodies, we get to see horrific images of plastic filled intestines of marine animals. We live in this world solely due to the interdependence between the diverse flora and fauna of this planet. We undertook this drive knowing a serious fact that the shores of Salalah are often used by turtles for their hatching period (June to September). The beautiful process of turtle hatchling as attracted many visitors from around the globe to Oman and we want these moments of nature to be captured by people, so as to inspire them to protect their environment. And thus, we took a step forward and organized this successful drive.
